In second semester last year, I partnered up with Kat and Lochie and we created a Flash game called Vagrant. Unfortunately I can't post that on here, but when I find a hosting space I'll chuck it up there so you can look at it.
Anyway, Vagrant was a side-view platform game, with the main protagonist being a tramp. It was a simple-yet-complex Flash game that took us ages, and we all got HDs as a result of it.
Now I really really like the underlying idea and think it'd be sweet as a pixel platform Flash game. Problem is, it'd take me fucking ages.
So this is what the pixel tramp looks like. I'm working on him doing a basic walk loop, some actions like jump, crouch, attack, and I'll put them together once done in an interactive Flash file for you guys to play around with.
Please, whatever you do, critique the hell out of him. I want to know if he's too dark, too light, not enough detail, what he should need or ideas to change.
It's great as it is, but if I absolutely had to pick some things out ..
If it's going to be the main character of a platformer I think it needs to stand out a bit from the background as it's what the rest of the viewer's attention focuses around. So maybe I'd turn the contrast up a little, and make the light source more directional. At the moment it seems a bit dim.
Another thing too might be the outline on his jacket looks a bit thick because of the darkest shade of brown on it.. could maybe be a tad lighter?
And for comic effect, you could exaggerate the bag a bit and make it bigger.
If he's homeless.. he's gotta fit all that he owns into a handkerchief bag.. so why not a big handkerchief bag?
Don't get the wrong idea mate, It's very good. I'm just nitpicking cause you asked me to.
Ah cheers Jules, that's the kind of response I'm after.
The darkness was an issue I was aware of, but I thought I'd get some opinions before I changed it.
The problem with the jacket shading would probably be there's too much of the darker shade. I might lessen that plus make it lighter. Same might go for the pants.
One question, with directional light sources, could you elaborate a bit? It's lost me a bit. :B
Sure. Uhm.. I can't work out where the light is coming from..
It looks like it's probably beaming down from the top right, but it's hard to tell because in some parts it looks like it's coming from just infront of him.
The legs are definitely too dark. And it might be because of the light source, but to me it seems odd that the legs are equally dark, because usually the 'foreground' leg is a bit brighter than the one behind.
And the jacket is bothering me. Don't remember a lot of pixel art terms anymore, but I think the word is 'illow shaded'. Think you're right when you say there's too much dark shades.
I like j-m-s' idea of enlarging the bag to make it comical, but that really depends on the theme of the game.
..wait, is that a beard? Yikes, didn't see the beard.
Overall I love the guy. Don't think otherwise, you asked us to slaughter him

"It is not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you." Quote from Batman Begins.
Yeah, it is pillow shaded a bit, I might break it up and add a fold or two when I fix up the jacket completely. It's obviously a problem, and it is quite distracting.
I'm gonna make the bag larger, as it might fit a bit better. Problem is working out how I'm going to get him to attack, I was gonna have him swing it around but I might have to rethink it a tad.
The legs are supposed to be jeans. Any idea what other colours may work?
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

Can't you still have him swing an enormous bag?
